Fence FAQs
Q. What does KII mean?
A. KII stands for Kroeker Innovations Inc., a construction company serving Winnipeg and surrounding areas since 2010. While we build great fences, we also keep busy (especially in the winter) with painting, drywall, finishing carpentry, and home & office renovations.
Q. How close can I build to the property line? ... How high can I build my fence?
A. See this city of Winnipeg brochure for fence size and location information.
Q. Who pays for a fence between me and a neighbour?
A. You are responsible for negotiating building a fence between yourself and a neighbour. Some neighbours share costs, others choose not to cooperate.
Q. Can KII build deck railings as well as fences?
A. Yes! Railings and fences share similarities, but are subject to different building codes. A simple guide to deck railings can be found in the City of Winnipeg deck brochure but note that it doesn't adequately cover one of the most important factors for railings - how to fasten the posts to the deck so the railing will be secure. This is a detailed topic, but know that for safety a deck post should be able to withstand 200lbs lateral force. Using ordinary deck screws to fasten it to the rim joist trim board, or worse yet using surface fasteners to attach it to the decking itself, will not meet that criteria. We can build you a deck railing that will be safe and look beautiful.
Q. How long do I have to wait before I can stain my fence?
A. Treated lumber is "dipped" into the treatment liquid and then shipped, so it is often soaking wet with preservative. This internal moisture will keep it from properly absorbing stain. Recommendations of how soon a fence can be stained vary, and will depend on the weather, but leaving the fence at least a couple months will allow more of the stain to penetrate, protecting the wood for longer.
Q. I want to have a sliding gate with a remote opener, like an automatic garage door. Can you install that?
A. Yes, we can help you with that. There are a number of manufacturers. While most homeowners choose to open and close their gates manually, we can provide you with some options for automatic openers as part of a free fence quote.
